GROUNDHOG DAY

Updated: Apr 6, 2021

This is a 1993 american movie, with Bill Murray and Andie Macdowell, in which the laws of karma are explained in a very subtle way, because the main idea of a man imprisioned in time, who lives the same day, every day of his life, make evident the need for higher purpose and the retributive nature of the universe, consequently the conclusion that is impossible to live our life, in this case survive, without a clear respect for this laws.

The story takes place at Punxsutawney, in Pensilvania, a village known for the divinatory powers of the town mascot, the groundhog Phil. The weatherman Philipe Connors, which by the way has the same name of the mascot, Phil, is an arrogant and presuptious journalist concerned with his career and public image, living an total egoistic life.

In the tradition of Punxsutawney Phil, which according to this reported local tradition the groundhog, could estimate the duration of sessons, in this case the end of winter and consequently the beginning of spring. The schooled journalist could not accept the tradition, and makes a mokery of is report, being sarcastic and provocative both on the locals and the crew.

He considers a complete farce, the delussional idea of a comun groundhog delivering messages in matter of science, which he believes in a total blunt way. His "scientific incriptation" and logical formatting is also an essential part of the plot of movie, once it is the resistence to the new reality based in his cerebral condition who prevents him to adapt to the new reality.

After mockering the locals and the custom of the 2nd of February, he abandons the local village and travel north througt the highway, until he is stopped by the cold blizzard, and gets stucked again in Punxsutawney. After a night sleep he wake up to discover he is on the same day again, the 2nd of February.

He also evidence desdain for his younger collegue, who he consideres less prepared for the job. His nasty attitude is punished with the curse. The curse is also an oppontunity to explore the personal network of the village and also his own crew. It is also and simultaneously an opportunity to develop self knowledge and social and emotional intelligence.

This transformation by using his communication skills and the need to be help in order to escape the repeating reality of groundhog day, brought to him the opportunity of discovering his true essence and by that recognize his empaty for his collegue Rita, and develops the romantic plot.

He couldn´t explain anyone his condition, because no one could live the next day, even when he explain Rita his situation, he only could be with her that day, because the next day she wouldn´t remember because she stayed in the past.

This was also an opportunity to get to know Rita in a different way, as he was trying to use her, he get to know her better, he takes time to know her really well and discover love in the process of learning about her, once he was temporal stuck in the moment.

The movie emphasize the need to encounter your goal, and rediscover life by readressing your priorities, and also demonstrates how important is to listen, to open your heart and get out of your mind. The repetition ceases the moment he encounters a truefull meaning to his life. Only in that moment, he wakes up in his new life and understands truly why the nightmare had to last so many, many years in the same day. Closing the chapter and the book, only when he open his heart and closed his mind.
